We are all inspired in our daily lives
by what we perceive around us, be it chance encounters with great
personalities, supreme craftsmen such as musicians or by the pure beauty
exuded by a young child; God personified.
It is difficult if not impossible to
define music. Suffice to say that music has been shown to suggest and
affect our state of mind. Moreover, musical patterns and structures shape
our perceptions of beauty, form, figures, themes and much more. All these
provide gifted musicians from different traditions to compose works that
are well balanced and make for an enjoyable experience for the
connoisseur of music.
Some years ago, Indian music maestros
flautist Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia and Ustad Zakir Hussain, themselves
inspired by their exposure to diverse musical traditions the world over,
collaborated with the legendary Norwegian Jazz Saxophonist Jan Garbarek
and the incomparable English Guitarist John McLaughlin to gel together in
the album Making Music, a truly ground breaking amalgam of music from the
East and West that set a bench mark for the younger generations to aspire
to. These Giants were truly inspired by the common thread that exists
between varying traditions of world music. In this case, just as Indian
classical music allows the artist the liberty to improvise within a
defined structure, Jazz musicians such as Garbarek find the same freedom
to embellish music with their own unique style. Guitarist John
McLaughlin, on the other hand, was exposed to Indian Music, particularly
the Carnatic tradition at a very young age that has continued to
influence his music to this day.
