Sanju Sahai, also known as Vishnu, is one of the finest Tabla players of his generation. He belongs to the 6th generation of Tabla players in the family. He began playing Tabla at the age of 4 and gave his first major performance at the age of 9. He has accompanied many of India's legendary musicians the world over.
About the Recording: This recording was done in one take back in January 2009 in Kolkata. I wanted the mood and the essence of this recording to be spiritual one and akin to a live performance. This is a "Shradhanjali" to the late Pandit Kishan Maharaj ji, and therefore it is my way of worship. I closed my eyes and in the way that one worships the Lord, I played as if I was offering him my prayers through my music. Hence, one can hear the essence and style of Pandit Kishen Maharaj ji at times.
This is a very special recording for me as the pieces I have played are very rare and traditional from the Benaras Gharana. In the second track of this recording (Madhya Laya Teen Taal) I have attempted to play in Pandit Shamta Prasad ji's style and other legends of Tabla today. - Sanju Sahai
